PSU Participation Mai 1968

This original gouache was created in France during the political and social upheaval of May 1968. Centred on the Parti Socialiste Unifié, or PSU, the composition combines the party’s initials with the word “Participation,” transforming a political idea into an energetic image of collective mobilisation.

A dense column of anonymous figures occupies the centre of the work. Individually reduced to simple white outlines, the figures merge into a single crowd set against a powerful black background. A prominently displayed PSU placard rises from the gathering, while several figures below carry a large banner bearing the word “Participation.”

The imagery expresses the relationship between individual action and collective power. Rather than depicting identifiable political leaders, the artist presents a multitude of ordinary participants whose repeated forms create an almost continuous human structure. Angular lines and fragmented shapes around the crowd heighten the impression of urgency, pressure and political confrontation.

The PSU played a distinctive role within the French New Left during May 1968, supporting the student movement, workers’ struggles and the principle of self-management. Participation was therefore more than a political slogan: it reflected demands for workers, students and citizens to take a direct role in shaping the institutions that governed their lives.

Executed by hand in black gouache on paper, this is a unique original artwork rather than an example from a printed edition. Its spontaneous line, handwritten typography and surviving signs of contemporary use preserve the immediacy of May 68, making it a compelling historical object for collectors of French political art, protest graphics and twentieth-century social history.
