This original 1961 French exhibition poster was created for a presentation at Le Point Cardinal in Paris, held during June and July 1961. It announced Pablo Picasso’s original engravings illustrating the Eighth Pythian Ode by the ancient Greek poet Pindar.

The central image reproduces a powerful linear portrait of a bearded classical figure. Its intense eyes, angular features and crown-like hair demonstrate Picasso’s ability to create a highly expressive character through a remarkably economical use of line.

The restrained black-and-cream palette gives the poster an elegant and scholarly appearance. Generous areas of empty space and carefully arranged typography place the artwork at the centre of the composition while clearly presenting the exhibition and publication details.

The accompanying edition featured a French translation by philosopher Jean Beaufret and was produced by P.A. Benoit. This collaboration reflects Picasso’s longstanding fascination with classical literature, mythology and the ancient Mediterranean, themes that appeared repeatedly throughout his career.

An elegant document from Picasso’s celebrated graphic work, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to Pablo Picasso, Greek literature, modern printmaking or Parisian exhibitions.
