This original 1967 poster printed in lithograph was designed by Michael Wood of Pyxis Studios for Ramlala, a two-night concert event held at California Hall in San Francisco. The performances were advertised for 9 and 10 June, from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m.
The poster announced the Steve Miller Blues Band alongside the Sparrow, the Canadian-American group whose members would shortly form Steppenwolf. Admission was priced at $2.50, with the event also promoting “Hi Gourmet Foods” and visuals by Aurora Glory Alice.
The highly imaginative illustration presents a golden planet resting upon an enormous striped and patterned cushion. Flying saucers, stars, fantastical botanical forms and tiny architectural details create a playful science-fiction universe, rendered in a striking palette of orange, pink, purple and black.
Michael Wood’s design for Pyxis Studios reflects the experimental atmosphere of San Francisco’s emerging psychedelic culture. Its surreal subject, intricate linework and saturated colours share the visual intensity associated with the city’s most inventive concert posters of the late 1960s. The poster was printed by Tea Lautrec Posters in San Francisco.
An original document from the formative period of the Steve Miller Band and the San Francisco psychedelic scene, this poster combines significant musical history with an exceptionally unusual design. It is particularly appealing to collectors of psychedelic art, early rock memorabilia, science-fiction imagery and American countercultural graphics.
