This original Cuban poster was created circa 1970 by Alfredo Rostgaard for OSPAAAL, the Organisation of Solidarity with the Peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America. It commemorates the fourth anniversary of the historic Tricontinental Conference held in Havana in 1966.
The composition features three stylised human figures contained within an intricate geometric cube. Rendered in green, red and ochre, the figures symbolise the peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America, united within a shared revolutionary movement.
The anniversary message appears in Spanish, English, French and Arabic, reflecting the international audience for which OSPAAAL posters were produced. The black background, vivid colours and striking spatial construction exemplify the inventive visual language of Cuban graphic design during this period.
Alfredo Rostgaard was one of the leading designers associated with OSPAAAL. His posters combined Pop Art, geometric abstraction and political symbolism to communicate complex international causes through immediately recognisable imagery.
An important example of post-revolutionary Cuban graphic design, this original offset-printed poster possesses both historical significance and exceptional decorative presence. It would make a compelling addition to a collection of political posters, Cuban art or twentieth-century graphic design.
