Issued circa 1900 as number 10 in Le Musée de Sires, this original poster printed in color lithography presents Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Qajar, ruler of Persia from 1896 to 1907. The series was conceived as a gallery of satirical portraits devoted to the sovereigns and political personalities who shaped international affairs at the turn of the century.
Roubille depicts the Shah seated in a carriage and surrounded by attendants, horses and military uniforms. His elongated moustache, compact silhouette and detached expression become the focal points of a composition dominated by black, muted blue and pale gold.
