Issued circa 1900 as number 13 in Le Musée de Sires, this original poster printed in color lithography depicts Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. Although the period caption reads “François-Joseph II,” the portrayed sovereign is the long-reigning Emperor Franz Joseph I.
Roubille shows him in a pale military uniform, red-striped trousers and an enormous feathered helmet. His bowed head, prominent side whiskers and stiff posture are framed by the silhouettes of other officials, creating a scene that feels ceremonial yet gently absurd.
Franz Joseph ruled the Habsburg monarchy from 1848 until 1916 and became one of the most recognizable sovereigns of nineteenth-century Europe. Roubille focuses upon the elaborate court dress and ritualized public image associated with his reign.
Auguste Roubille developed his reputation through posters, book illustration and contributions to the major humorous periodicals of Paris. His caricatures relied on economical drawing and carefully chosen exaggerations rather than heavily modeled portraiture.
This original poster brings together Habsburg history, Belle Époque satire and sophisticated graphic design, making it an excellent decorative and historical piece for collectors.
