This original circa 1930 French travel poster was designed by Fernand Schultz-Wettel to promote Riquewihr and the Alsace region. Issued for the Alsace-Lorraine railway network, it presents the historic wine-growing village as a picturesque destination for visitors travelling through eastern France.
The composition overlooks Riquewihr’s red rooftops, medieval defensive towers and traditional half-timbered houses. Vineyards fill the foreground, while the rolling foothills of the Vosges Mountains create a peaceful backdrop behind the village.
Schultz-Wettel employs a warm palette of ochre, terracotta, green and muted blue, capturing the distinctive atmosphere of the Alsatian landscape. Printed by the Imprimerie Alsacienne in Strasbourg, this poster printed in lithograph is completed by elegant lettering and the stylised Alsace-Lorraine railway monogram.
Fernand Schultz-Wettel was an Alsatian painter, illustrator and poster designer whose work frequently celebrated the region’s architecture, landscapes and cultural identity. His carefully structured compositions combine descriptive precision with the decorative qualities of early twentieth-century travel advertising.
A charming and highly decorative example of French regional tourism design, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to Alsace, railway history, wine regions or European travel.
