Original Spanish screenprinted poster issued in 1968 for the III Concurso Nacional de Fotografía Turística, or “Third National Tourism Photography Competition.”
The competition was organised by Spain’s Ministry of Information and Tourism through its Directorate-General for Tourism Promotion. Information and competition rules were available from tourist information offices and photographic establishments, as stated on the poster. The lower margin also identifies the Madrid printing company Mateu-Cromo S.A. and notes that the publication was distributed free of charge and was not intended for sale.
The design combines the principal themes of photography, landscape and Spanish sunshine. A large-format bellows camera stands prominently on its tripod against a simplified mountainous horizon. Above it, a decorative circular motif resembles both a radiant sun and the opening of a camera lens.
The limited palette of warm orange, black, pale grey, white and vivid magenta creates a striking visual hierarchy. Modern lowercase typography is arranged asymmetrically beside the central image, while the irregular edges separating the different colour fields suggest torn paper, mountainous scenery or layered photographic backdrops.
Its clean geometry and reduced forms reflect the international modernist graphic language adopted by Spanish tourism advertising during the 1960s. Rather than depicting a particular monument or destination, the poster presents photography itself as a means of discovering and promoting the country.
This original screenprinted poster is an attractive document from a period when Spain was rapidly developing its international tourism industry. Combining mid-century graphic design, photographic history and official Spanish tourism promotion, it would be particularly appealing to collectors of vintage travel posters, camera-related imagery and post-war European design.
