Original colour screenprint poster created by American Pop artist Tom Wesselmann for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Published by Edition Olympia 1972 GmbH, this striking work belongs to the celebrated series of artists’ posters commissioned to unite contemporary art with the international world of sport.
Wesselmann transforms the human foot into a bold, monumental emblem. Rendered in soft pink against an intense green ground, the dramatically enlarged subject fills almost the entire composition. Its simplified contours, flat colours and unexpected scale are characteristic of the artist’s distinctive Pop Art vocabulary.
The deliberately ordinary subject becomes humorous, sensual and immediately memorable. By isolating a fragment of the body and presenting it with the visual authority of a commercial symbol, Wesselmann blurs the traditional boundary between fine art, advertising and popular culture.
The lower panel incorporates the Olympic rings, the radiant Munich emblem and the German inscription “Olympische Spiele München 1972.” The design is signed and dated “Wesselmann 70” within the image, reflecting the year in which the composition was conceived for the forthcoming Games.
An iconic example of post-war graphic design and American Pop Art, this original Olympic poster would make a compelling addition to a collection devoted to Tom Wesselmann, sporting history, twentieth-century design or vintage international advertising.
