This original circa 1930 French advertising poster was designed by Edmond Maurus for the Grand Prix de Paris sweepstake. Issued with the guarantee of the Société d’Encouragement, it promoted selected fractional tickets intended to offer participants multiple chances in the draw.
The dynamic composition transforms the racecourse into an enormous field of sweeping numbered lines. White silhouettes of galloping horses and jockeys surge towards the distance, their elongated shadows creating a powerful impression of speed and competition.
Maurus employs a striking gradient of yellow, green and black, punctuated by bold cream lettering. The dramatic perspective, simplified figures and monumental typography give the poster a distinctly modern Art Deco character.
The Grand Prix de Paris was one of France’s most prestigious horse races and was traditionally held at Longchamp Racecourse. By combining imagery from racing and games of chance, Maurus created an immediate visual connection between the excitement of the event and its associated sweepstake.
A bold and highly decorative example of interwar French advertising, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to horse racing, Paris, Art Deco or vintage sporting design.
