Tallinn - Intourist Circa 1960
Regular price €500,00Produced around 1960, this original Intourist travel poster promotes Tallinn, the historic capital of Estonia, then one of the republics of the Soviet Union. Created for the Soviet state travel agency Intourist, the poster was designed to encourage both foreign visitors and travelers from across the Eastern Bloc to discover one of the Baltic region's most picturesque medieval cities.
The composition presents three women dressed in traditional Estonian folk costumes seated before the imposing towers of Tallinn's Old Town, whose remarkably preserved medieval architecture has long been regarded as one of Northern Europe's greatest urban treasures. The contrast between colorful national dress and ancient stone fortifications conveys a carefully crafted image of cultural heritage, hospitality, and historical continuity.
Founded in 1929, Intourist served as the Soviet Union's official tourism organization and was responsible for virtually all international travel within the USSR. Its promotional posters sought to highlight the immense cultural and geographic diversity of the Soviet republics, often emphasizing local traditions, architecture, and folklore rather than overt political themes. Estonia, with its Hanseatic history and distinctive Baltic identity, occupied a special place within these campaigns.
Tallinn itself dates back to the Middle Ages and became a prosperous trading center of the Hanseatic League. Its remarkably intact defensive walls, Gothic churches, merchant houses, and winding cobbled streets survived both world wars largely unscathed, making the city one of Europe's finest preserved medieval capitals. Today, Tallinn's Old Town is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its exceptional historical authenticity.
The poster's vivid color photography reflects the changing style of Soviet travel advertising during the 1960s. Unlike earlier illustrated tourism posters, many Intourist publications from this period embraced high-quality photographic imagery, presenting destinations in a more modern and accessible manner while retaining strong graphic design elements.
Original Intourist posters were printed in relatively limited numbers for use in travel agencies, exhibitions, and tourism offices. Because they were intended for promotional display rather than long-term preservation, surviving examples in good condition have become increasingly sought after by collectors of Cold War ephemera, Soviet graphic design, and vintage travel posters.
Today, this original Tallinn Intourist poster is appreciated not only for its documentary value but also for its elegant portrayal of Estonia's rich cultural traditions. Combining folk costume, medieval architecture, and classic mid-century travel design, it remains an evocative reminder of one of Europe's most beautiful historic cities.
