This original 1971 railway travel poster was designed by Andrian to promote journeys through Germany. Entitled L’Allemagne par le train, or “Germany by Train”, this French-language design bears the DB and WER marks and was intended to attract international travellers to the German railway network.

The composition presents a stylised electric train passing through a serene Alpine landscape. A traditional village with a church and half-timbered houses sits between rolling hills, fir trees and a dramatic range of snow-covered mountains.

Andrian employs a restrained palette of violet, lavender, grey, white and black. Layered horizontal bands create a strong sense of depth, while the geometric treatment of the landscape and train gives the poster a distinctly modern graphic character.

The prominent Deutsche Bundesbahn logo identifies the campaign with West Germany’s national railway company. Combining modern rail transport with romantic regional scenery, the design presents train travel as an elegant and comfortable way to discover the country.

A striking example of 1970s European railway advertising, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to Germany, Deutsche Bundesbahn, Alpine landscapes or modernist travel design.
