This original 1957 travel poster was designed by Abel to advertise package holidays from Belgium to Paris and the Côte d’Azur. It promotes a selection of inclusive tours departing from Belgian railway stations, with information available through several leading travel agencies.
The upper section evokes Paris through a playful arrangement of the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Arc de Triomphe. Below, the Côte d’Azur is represented by the Mediterranean Sea, a sunbather and a smiling sun resting upon a bright yellow beach.
Abel uses a fresh mid-century palette of turquoise, blue, yellow, red and cream. Simplified illustrations, hand-drawn outlines and bold stencil-style lettering create an engaging composition filled with the optimism and humour of post-war European travel advertising.
The poster presents two contrasting visions of France: the architectural and cultural attractions of Paris and the relaxed seaside pleasures of the French Riviera. Its clearly displayed itineraries and prices reflect the growing popularity of organised international holidays during the 1950s.
A cheerful and highly decorative example of mid-century tourism design, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to Paris, the Côte d’Azur, Belgian travel agencies or vintage European advertising.
