This original 1955 French travel poster was designed by Saindré for the SNCF to promote tourism in the Cévennes. Its inscription, Visitez les Cévennes, or “Visit the Cévennes”, encouraged travellers to discover the region using the trains and coaches of the French national railway network.
The composition depicts a fisherman standing beside a rushing river, with a stone bridge, traditional houses and dramatic rocky peaks rising behind him. The scene celebrates both the unspoilt landscape and the outdoor pursuits offered by this mountainous region of southern France.
Saindré employs an expressive palette of emerald green, vivid blue, ochre, orange and deep red. Broad painterly strokes and striking contrasts give the landscape a lively, almost theatrical character, while the monumental rock formations lend the image a powerful sense of scale.
Created during the golden age of post-war French railway advertising, the poster combines regional scenery with a direct invitation to travel. Saindré’s energetic treatment transforms the Cévennes into a colourful and enticing destination, balancing natural grandeur with the quiet pleasure of fishing.
A vibrant example of mid-century French tourism design, this original SNCF poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to railway history, fishing, mountain landscapes or vintage European travel.
