This original circa 1950 French advertising poster was designed by Albert Brenet for Ets Martell in Cognac. Entitled “Distillerie du Logis Saint-Martin,” it offers a fascinating view inside one of the company’s traditional distilling facilities.
The composition depicts a long row of copper pot stills installed above brick furnaces, their curved pipes forming a rhythmic pattern through the interior. Workers and wooden barrels provide a human scale while illustrating the different stages of Cognac production.
Brenet employs rich shades of copper, red, brown, ochre and grey to capture the warmth and intensity of the working distillery. The repeated stills and strong receding perspective create an impressive sense of depth, precision and industrial activity.
Albert Brenet was a celebrated French painter, illustrator and poster designer. Particularly admired for his dynamic depictions of ships, transport, industry and modern life, he combined careful observation with expressive colour and confident brushwork.
A striking and highly decorative example of mid-century French commercial art, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to Albert Brenet, Martell Cognac, distillation or industrial heritage.
