This original circa 1950 French advertising poster was designed by Albert Brenet for Ets Martell, the celebrated Cognac house. Entitled “Le Hall des Foudres,” it presents the impressive interior of the company’s production and storage facilities.
The composition reveals a vast industrial hall filled with monumental wooden foudres, or large vats, arranged above rows of traditional barrels. Small figures working among the vessels emphasise the extraordinary scale of the installation.
Brenet employs rich shades of brown, ochre, black and red to capture the warmth of the timber and the dramatic atmosphere of the interior. The strong perspective created by the repeated vats, columns and roof structure draws the viewer deep into the scene.
Albert Brenet was a celebrated French painter, illustrator and poster designer. Particularly admired for his dynamic depictions of ships, transport, industry and modern life, he combined documentary precision with expressive colour and confident brushwork.
A striking and highly decorative example of mid-century French commercial art, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to Albert Brenet, Martell Cognac, wine and spirits or industrial heritage.
