This original 1974 Mexican travel poster was designed by Regina Raull to promote Chiapas and the services of Mexicana de Aviación. Produced for the French market, it also identifies Air France as Mexicana’s general agent in France.
The composition presents two figures in traditional regional dress surrounded by the lush vegetation and flowers of southern Mexico. Behind them, a Maya temple recalls the archaeological site of Palenque, while a monumental waterfall and a small passenger aircraft complete the evocation of Chiapas.
Raull combines soft, painterly modelling with a rich palette of green, blue, red and ochre. The elegant figures and carefully arranged landscape are complemented by the large decorative “Chiapas” lettering and the distinctive modernist typography of the Mexicana logo.
Regina Raull was a Spanish-born Mexican painter, muralist and illustrator who trained at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. Her work frequently explored Mexican history, Indigenous communities and regional traditions, combining figurative painting with the monumental qualities associated with Mexican muralism.
A colourful and highly decorative example of twentieth-century airline advertising, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to Mexico, aviation, Latin American art or vintage travel design.
