Dating from circa 1885, this original panoramic print presents the spectacular Alpine landscape visible from the Eggishorn, whose altitude is historically recorded on the work as 2,934 metres. The panorama was drawn by Swiss engineer and topographer Xaver Imfeld and engraved by C. Bertrand.

The Great Aletsch Glacier dominates the composition, flowing through the centre like an immense frozen river. Its sweeping curves lead the eye towards a seemingly endless succession of mountain ridges and snow-covered summits. The exceptionally wide format communicates the monumental scale of the landscape and recreates the experience of observing it from a high Alpine viewpoint.

Numerous mountains and geographical features are identified above the horizon using fine vertical guide lines. These annotations transformed the image into a valuable reference for travellers, mountaineers and students of Alpine geography, while Bertrand’s precise engraving translated the complex mountain terrain with remarkable clarity and depth.

Xaver Imfeld was one of the most important Swiss panorama illustrators, cartographers and relief artists of the nineteenth century. His work combined scientific topographical accuracy with an exceptional understanding of mountain forms. This panorama was created during a period of growing interest in Alpine exploration and records the Great Aletsch Glacier when it was considerably more extensive than it is today.

With its dramatic Swiss Alps scenery, important cartographic authorship and unusual horizontal format, this original panorama will appeal to collectors of Alpine imagery, antique travel prints, mountaineering history and glacier-related works. It is both an elegant decorative piece and a fascinating historical document of the largest glacier in the Alps.
