Published in 1983, this original French exhibition poster was created for Edvard Munch: Gravures & Lithographies, held at Galerie Berggruen in Paris from 12 October to 17 December. The design reproduces one of Munch’s most celebrated and psychologically complex images, Madonna.

Munch first produced Madonna as a lithograph in 1895 before developing several coloured versions of the composition. This poster is therefore not an original Munch lithograph, but an authentic period poster advertising the 1983 exhibition and reproducing the historic artwork.

A pale female figure emerges from a dense field of flowing black lines, her tilted head surrounded by a narrow red halo. The intense crimson border contains sperm-like forms, while a small foetus-like figure appears in the lower-left corner. These elements connect sensuality, conception, life and mortality—recurring themes throughout Munch’s work.

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was a Norwegian painter and printmaker whose emotionally charged imagery helped shape modern Expressionism. His prints allowed him to revisit and transform important motifs such as The Scream, Vampire and Madonna, experimenting with colour, texture and different states of the same image.

Printed in colour by the Clot, Bramsen and Georges workshops, this original exhibition poster will appeal to collectors of Edvard Munch, Expressionist art and Parisian gallery history. Its powerful imagery and refined typography give it a dramatic presence while clearly distinguishing it from an editioned, signed Munch print.
