Created circa 1970 by Raymond Savignac for Air France, J’y vole, donc j’y suis is a wonderfully inventive example of post-war French advertising. The slogan—approximately “I fly there, therefore I am there”—playfully reworks René Descartes’ famous phrase Je pense, donc je suis, transforming a philosophical statement into a witty celebration of air travel.
Against an expansive deep-blue background, Savignac depicts a smiling businessman soaring effortlessly through the air. His body becomes almost aeroplane-like, while the Air France briefcase suspended beneath him provides the visual punchline. The simplified figure, expressive drawing and generous use of empty space make the message immediately understandable.
The image reflects the optimism of the Jet Age, when commercial aviation was increasingly associated with modernity, freedom and international mobility. Rather than showing an aircraft or a destination, Savignac focuses on the passenger himself, presenting flight as an experience of personal liberation.
Raymond Savignac (1907–2002) was one of the most distinctive French poster artists of the twentieth century. Celebrated for his humorous simplicity, he reduced advertising ideas to a single memorable image, combining bold colours, lively characters and clever visual wordplay. This original poster, printed in offset lithography, perfectly demonstrates his ability to communicate a complete story with remarkable economy.
A particularly appealing piece for collectors of Savignac, Air France memorabilia, aviation history and mid-century French graphic design. Its strong blue palette, playful subject and highly recognisable visual language also make it an engaging decorative work for both classic and contemporary interiors.
