Dating from around 1880, this original panoramic print depicts the Mont Blanc mountain range as seen from La Flégère, an elevated viewpoint overlooking the Chamonix Valley in the French Alps. Created during the rapid development of Alpine tourism and mountaineering, such detailed panoramas allowed nineteenth-century travellers to identify the principal summits, glaciers and landmarks visible from celebrated observation points.

The exceptionally wide composition extends across the entire Mont Blanc massif. Rocky pastures and the buildings of La Flégère occupy the foreground, while the Chamonix Valley opens below. Beyond it rise the sharply rendered peaks, ridges and glaciers of the range, creating a remarkable impression of distance and geographical scale.

Small printed captions identify the principal mountains and natural features along the horizon. This combination of landscape art and topographical information reflects the educational purpose of nineteenth-century Alpine panoramas, which were often produced for travellers, mountaineers and readers of illustrated guidebooks.

The monochrome treatment places particular emphasis on line, texture and geological structure. Dense engraving-like marks describe the rocky slopes, wooded areas and flowing glaciers, while the horizontal format recreates the experience of slowly surveying the landscape from La Flégère itself.

An evocative historical document for collectors of Alpine imagery, mountaineering memorabilia, early travel material and views of Chamonix and Mont Blanc. Its unusual panoramic proportions and finely detailed topography make it an impressive decorative work as well as a fascinating record of nineteenth-century exploration of the French Alps.
