Created circa 1950, this original French advertising poster by Gispert promotes RD-Radio, presented by the campaign as “L’As des récepteurs”—“The Ace of Radio Receivers.” The design reflects the growing importance of radio in French domestic life during the years following the Second World War.
At the time, radio receivers were commonly known in France as postes de T.S.F., an abbreviation of Télégraphie Sans Fil, or wireless telegraphy. Before television became widespread, these sets were an essential source of news, music and entertainment, while their modern appearance also made them desirable household objects.
Gispert builds the advertisement around a playful visual metaphor. A large die marked “RD Radio” appears to have been successfully thrown, accompanied by the handwritten expression “Bien joué!”—“Well played!” The slogan suggests that choosing an RD-Radio receiver is a winning decision, while the description of the brand as an “ace” continues the theme of games and good fortune.
The striking red lettering, deep blue background and softly airbrushed transitions give the poster a distinctly mid-century appearance. The central object is dramatically isolated and enlarged, allowing the brand name to remain immediately legible while creating an image that is both simple and memorable.
The poster is signed Gispert, although little reliable biographical information about the artist has been recorded. Its bold design and clever wordplay make it an appealing example of postwar French commercial graphics, particularly suited to collectors of radio history, vintage electronics, mid-century advertising and French industrial design.
