This original poster printed in color lithography was issued circa 1900 as number 8 in Le Musée de Sires. It caricatures Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, shortly before he succeeded Queen Victoria as King Edward VII in 1901.
Roubille presents the future monarch as a confident man of society, dressed in a dark coat and towering top hat with a cigar between his lips. Fashionably dressed women surround him, their pale blue clothing and extravagant hats creating a lively contrast with his imposing black silhouette.
The image refers to the Prince of Wales’s well-known association with fashionable society, entertainment and the cosmopolitan pleasures of late nineteenth-century Europe. Roubille transforms these recognizable aspects of his public persona into a concise and immediately legible visual joke.
A painter, illustrator, decorator and poster designer, Auguste Roubille became particularly admired for his political and social caricatures. His work appeared in numerous Parisian humorous journals, where his bold outlines and simplified colors were especially effective.
With its distinctly Belle Époque subject and stylish graphic treatment, this original poster is an appealing acquisition for collectors of British royal history, French satire and early modern poster design.
