Created in 1974 by celebrated American artist Alexander Calder, this original poster was produced for the humanitarian organization Terre des Hommes. Printed by Gibert Clarey in Tours, the design is signed and dated within the image with Calder’s distinctive “CA 74” monogram.

The composition depicts a solitary child standing before a devastated landscape filled with tree stumps and a small number of remaining bare trunks. Above the hills, a vivid red sun provides the poster’s only strong area of colour, creating a dramatic contrast with Calder’s expressive black line drawing.

Through this deliberately simple image, Calder connects environmental destruction with its consequences for future generations. The small figure appears powerless before the scale of the deforested landscape, transforming the poster into a direct and memorable appeal for both ecological and humanitarian responsibility.

Terre des Hommes was founded in Lausanne in 1960 by Edmond Kaiser to assist children affected by poverty, war and displacement. Named after Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s book Terre des hommes, the organization developed into an international movement dedicated to protecting children and defending their fundamental rights.

Best known for his mobiles and monumental sculptures, Calder also created an important body of graphic work characterized by spontaneous lines, simplified figures and primary colours. Combining an internationally recognized artist with a powerful environmental message, this original poster will appeal to collectors of Calder’s work, humanitarian graphics and twentieth-century ecological posters.
