This original 1968 concert poster was designed by Lee Conklin for Bill Graham’s Summer Series at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. Catalogued as BG-125 in the celebrated Bill Graham poster series, it advertised six evenings of live music held from 18 to 23 June 1968.

The Chambers Brothers, It’s a Beautiful Day and the Crazy World of Arthur Brown performed from 18 to 20 June, followed by Quicksilver Messenger Service and Sly and the Family Stone from 21 to 23 June. The psychedelic light show was provided by the Holy See.

Conklin created an extraordinarily intricate composition in orange, blue and black, incorporating human bodies, outstretched hands and concealed faces throughout the image. Most remarkably, stylised female figures form parts of the lettering, making the performers’ names gradually emerge from the dense, surreal design.

Lee Conklin became one of the defining artists of San Francisco’s psychedelic era after presenting his work to concert promoter Bill Graham. Between 1968 and 1969, he designed more than thirty posters for the Fillmore, developing a distinctive style in which typography, anatomy and imaginary creatures merge into elaborate visual puzzles.

An original example of one of Conklin’s most inventive Fillmore designs, this poster represents the experimental music and counterculture of late-1960s San Francisco. Its important lineup, complex artwork and place within the numbered Bill Graham series make it especially appealing to collectors of psychedelic art, rock memorabilia and American graphic design.
