This 1957 original poster was designed by the celebrated French graphic artist Bernard Villemot to promote a national investment campaign centered on coal production. The slogan “Charbon – richesse nationale” (“Coal – national wealth”) emphasizes the strategic importance of coal as a cornerstone of France’s industrial and economic development during the postwar period.

The poster was created to support a government-backed national loan (“emprunt”), encouraging citizens to invest financially in the country’s energy and industrial sectors. Such campaigns were common during the reconstruction decades following the Post-war reconstruction in France, when energy resources were considered vital to national growth and independence.

Villemot’s design is strikingly modern. At the center of the composition appears a large piece of coal, dramatically isolated against a vivid red background. Behind it, stylized industrial structures—pipes, towers, and factory forms—create a geometric framework that evokes the infrastructure of heavy industry. The bold use of color and simplified shapes reflects Villemot’s signature graphic language, which combines clarity with strong visual impact.

Coal played a central role in France’s economy throughout the mid-twentieth century. It fueled power stations, steel production, railways, and much of the country’s manufacturing sector. Institutions such as Charbonnages de France managed national coal production and symbolized the modernization of French industry during the reconstruction era.

Bernard Villemot became one of the most influential poster designers of the twentieth century, known for creating memorable advertising images for major companies and public campaigns. His work is distinguished by its bold colors, simplified forms, and powerful symbolism, qualities clearly visible in this poster.

Today, posters such as Charbon – richesse nationale are valued both as graphic design masterpieces and as historical documents. They illustrate how art and visual communication were used to promote national economic initiatives and reflect the industrial ambitions of France during the transformative decades of the 1950s.
