Sac Pop Shop 1985

This original Pop Shop drawstring bag features colourful screenprinted designs on both sides of red plastic. The imagery bears the printed date “© K. Haring 85” and the bag was published for Keith Haring’s official Pop Shop at 292 Lafayette Street in New York.

One side depicts a vibrant red figure running beneath the Pop Shop star logo, surrounded by energetic movement lines and raised hands. The reverse presents the same central logo encircled by a lively procession of Haring’s characteristic dancing figures, crawling babies and barking dogs.

The intense red, purple, turquoise, yellow and green palette is unified by Haring’s unmistakable black outlines. Every figure appears animated by radiating marks, creating the sense of collective movement, music and spontaneous celebration that defines much of his work.

Keith Haring established the Pop Shop to make his art available beyond the traditional gallery system through affordable clothing, accessories and everyday objects. The Lafayette Street shop opened in 1986, meaning that although the designs are dated 1985, the bag itself was most likely issued from 1986 onwards.

Combining artwork, fashion and New York cultural history, this double-sided screenprinted bag is a highly collectable example of original Pop Shop merchandise. Its vivid imagery and ephemeral plastic medium perfectly embody Haring’s belief that art should be accessible, public and part of everyday life.
