This original travel poster was created circa 1960 by the celebrated Danish illustrator Ib Antoni to promote Denmark to an international audience. The German-language title Dänemark translates simply as “Denmark.”

The playful composition features a smiling member of the Royal Danish Guard standing beside an oversized cannon. Above him, a lively arrangement of birds, a ballerina, musical instruments, artists’ palettes, theatrical masks and dining utensils emerges from the cannon like a burst of celebratory confetti.

Antoni combines broad, painterly brushstrokes with a restrained palette of red, blue, black and metallic gold. The generous cream background and elegant grey typography give the poster a light, modern appearance characteristic of Scandinavian graphic design during the 1950s and 1960s.

Ib Antoni was one of Denmark’s most influential poster artists and created more than 300 designs during his career. His humorous and immediately recognisable illustrations helped shape the international image of Denmark and Copenhagen, frequently incorporating royal guards, ballet dancers, mermaids and other symbols of Danish culture.

With its charming imagery, unusual cultural details and distinctly mid-century aesthetic, this original poster is an appealing piece of Scandinavian design history. It will particularly interest collectors of Danish graphic art, European travel advertising and vintage tourism posters.
