This original 1986 limited-edition poster was produced after Andy Warhol’s celebrated Marilyn Monroe series and issued in association with the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. It is numbered 1824 from an edition of 2,400 and bears Warhol’s printed signature within the image; it is not hand-signed by the artist.

The portrait is based on a publicity photograph of Marilyn Monroe created for the 1953 film Niagara. Warhol first transformed this Hollywood image into one of his most recognisable Pop Art subjects, reducing the actress’s features to a powerful emblem of fame, beauty and mass-media culture.

A vivid pink ground surrounds Monroe’s orange face, pale blonde hair and deep blue shadows, while touches of green provide an additional colour contrast. This poster printed in lithograph recreates the bold flat colours, deliberate misregistration and graphic immediacy associated with Warhol’s screenprinted portraits.

Andy Warhol was one of the defining figures of American Pop Art. Through his repeated images of celebrities, consumer products and news photographs, he challenged traditional distinctions between fine art, advertising and popular culture.

A striking limited-edition interpretation of one of the twentieth century’s most iconic portraits, this numbered poster would make a distinctive addition to a collection devoted to Pop Art, Marilyn Monroe, cinema or contemporary graphic design.
