Diên Biên Phu is a town and huyện (district) in northern Vietnam in the province of Điện Biên, in the northwest region of Vietnam, itself located in Upper Tonkin. Occupied by the French in November 1953 (Operation Castor), this small town became the scene of a violent battle between the French expeditionary corps and the bulk of the Vietnamese troops (Việt Minh) the following year.
The battle ended on May 7, 1954, with a cessation of fire, in accordance with instructions received from the French general staff in Hanoi. The battle of Diên Biên Phu was the last major confrontation of the Indochina war.
Paul Hubert Colin, ( 1892-1985 ) was a painter, draughtsman, costume designer, set designer and one of the most innovative and influential French poster lithographers of the early 20th century.
