This charming 1962 original travel poster by André Dignimont was commissioned by the SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français) to celebrate Parisian elegance, highlighting the Opéra Garnier and the famous Café de la Paix.

The artwork captures a lively terrace scene outside the Café de la Paix, with elegantly dressed Parisians, fashionable women in hats, café waiters, and artists sketching under the lush spring foliage. In the background rises the ornate facade of the Opéra Garnier, crowned by its gilded sculpture of Harmony, anchoring the composition with a symbol of Parisian cultural prestige.

André Dignimont (1891-1965) was a celebrated French illustrator, painter, and poster artist known for his refined depictions of Parisian life, society portraits, and theatrical designs. His fluid watercolour technique, expressive linework, and intimate observation of urban elegance are evident in this piece, infusing it with warmth, vitality, and timeless glamour.

Printed by Lucien Serre, this poster is part of SNCF’s renowned mid-century campaign that invited travellers to discover the cultural heart of France by train. Combining artistic sophistication with advertising clarity, Dignimont’s composition evokes a nostalgic vision of Paris in the 1960s – a city of terrace cafés, haute couture, and architectural splendour.

Today, this poster is highly sought after by collectors for its authentic depiction of Parisian café life, its association with SNCF’s golden era of railway art, and the signature elegance of Dignimont’s artistic legacy.
