In this striking 1984 poster created by the celebrated French graphic artist Bernard Villemot, the timeless elegance of Burgundy meets the forward momentum of modernity. Commissioned by the Conseil Régional de Bourgogne, the artwork boldly declares the region’s motto: “Une tradition de progrès”—a tradition of progress—blending past and future into a unified, vibrant landscape.

Villemot’s composition is brilliantly stylized, using rich, geometric patterns reminiscent of medieval tapestries to frame a contemporary scene. The vivid hills of Burgundy unfold in blocks of color, their abstract patchwork echoing the rhythms of vineyards and farmland. Cutting through this landscape is a sleek TGV train in motion—a clear symbol of technological advancement and connectivity, powering through the land of Romanesque abbeys and Pinot Noir.

The juxtaposition of ancient motifs with the speed of the train captures Villemot’s genius: distilling complex cultural identities into visual poetry. As with his iconic work for Orangina or Bally, Villemot applies bold contrast, elegant form, and symbolic clarity to communicate more than a message—it becomes a celebration.

This poster is not just travel or regional promotion; it’s a visual manifesto. Burgundy is not a region frozen in time, but one that proudly carries its heritage forward, riding the rails of innovation into a colorful, dynamic future.
