This luminous and optimistic 1933 original lithographic poster by M. Jacquot was designed to promote the annual pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, one of Europe’s most sacred and enduring spiritual traditions.

In a striking Art Deco palette of warm oranges and soft pastels, the poster features a joyful young pilgrim greeting the viewer, staff in hand and hat raised, with the majestic Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela rising in the background. At his chest, the scallop shell—emblem of Saint James—marks his devotion and identity as a pilgrim. The lower part of the composition features a steamship, symbolizing the international nature of the pilgrimage and the era’s growing accessibility by sea.

Jacquot’s style is both cheerful and idealized, evoking the energy of youth, faith, and the power of shared journeys. His rendering of the boy, full of movement and sincerity, invites viewers to participate in the collective experience of pilgrimage, linking past and present, tradition and modernity.

Posters from this period promoting religious or civic gatherings are rare and increasingly sought after. This piece captures a unique moment when modern transport met ancient ritual, and faith was celebrated with graphic clarity and emotional warmth.
