Created around 1920 by the French artist Julien Lacaze, this original travel poster was commissioned by the Chemins de fer d’Alsace et de Lorraine, the regional railway network reestablished following the return of Alsace-Lorraine to France after World War I.
Part of a broader campaign to celebrate and promote the scenic richness of the newly reintegrated regions, this poster focuses on L’Étang de Bischwald, a tranquil and historic pond near Morhange in the Moselle department. Known for its natural beauty, the Bischwald area offered visitors and locals alike a picturesque setting ideal for rest, fishing, and countryside excursions—capturing the essence of rural French charm.
Julien Lacaze, a noted illustrator of the interwar period, was known for his refined style that combined clarity, elegance, and a strong sense of place. His work for regional tourism often aimed to reframe the national narrative and encourage travel within a still-recovering France.
Today, this poster is an exceptional piece of French railway heritage, valued for both its historical significance and its artistic merit. It reflects a period when art and travel were seamlessly entwined in the service of national unity and cultural rediscovery.
