Bold, raw, and unmistakably Picasso — this original 1963 exhibition poster was created for the “Les Potiers” summer ceramics show held in Vallauris, the small town on the Côte d’Azur that became Picasso’s ceramic haven.

Featuring a stylized face drawn in a single continuous line, the poster is dominated by the artist’s scrawled text: “Exposition Vallauris 1963.” This primitive script, etched in ochre against a deep earthen red, evokes both cave painting and pottery markings — a nod to the ancient craft traditions that inspired Picasso’s ceramic work.

Printed for the exhibition at 15 Rue Sicard, the show celebrated the collaboration between Picasso and the local potters of Vallauris, where he had been working prolifically since the late 1940s. This poster captures the essence of that era: ceramics as art, and Picasso as both innovator and inheritor of Mediterranean artisan legacies.

Sought after by collectors of Picasso ephemera, ceramic history, and post-war graphic design, this piece stands as a rare and evocative artifact of Picasso’s passionate engagement with form, earth, and fire.
