Beautiful poster by Abel Truchet for the Moulin Rouge dancers.

Painter, draughtsman and poster artist, Louis Abel-Truchet (1857-1918) is, along with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, one of the most famous representatives of Parisian life at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Trained at the Académie Julian, he quickly adopted a pointillist style, which he used in landscapes and genre scenes. Nevertheless, he particularly excelled in paintings and posters illustrating Paris at that time. Cafés, balls, theaters, cabarets, Montmartre, Pigalle, the Folies-Bergères and the Moulin-Rouge were his favorite themes.
The Moulin Rouge is best known as the birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance. Originally introduced as a dance of seduction by the courtesans who operated there, the can-can dance revue evolved into a form of entertainment in its own right and led to the introduction of cabarets throughout Europe.
