The Celestials Circa 1890

This is an original poster by John Hassall titled “The Celestials,” created circa early 1900s for David Allen & Sons, Harrow, London. It features two Chinese figures performing a street card trick, depicted in Hassall’s iconic bold line and flat colour style with a vivid red border and clean lettering. John Hassall (1868–1948) was one of Britain’s most influential illustrators and poster artists, known as “The Poster King” for his prolific output of advertising, theatre, and travel posters during the Edwardian era. This design promoted a music hall variety act themed on ‘Oriental’ performances, which were popular at the time, and showcases Hassall’s ability to combine humour, caricature, and clear graphic impact in a single composition. Printed as a stone lithograph by David Allen & Sons, it remains in excellent condition with strong colours and light age marks consistent with archival preservation. A rare and collectable piece of British poster art history representing the golden age of illustrated advertising design.
