This striking 1935 original bullfighting poster designed by the celebrated Spanish artist Ruano Llopis was created for the Plaza de Toros de Jaén, announcing a series of grand bullfights held from October 18 to 21. A masterwork of dynamic composition and dramatic flair, the image places the viewer directly behind a matador as he prepares to enter the arena, caught in a tense moment of anticipation. Llopis, known for his vivid and emotionally charged depictions of tauromachia, brings the scene to life with vigorous brushwork and an intense color palette. The bold tones of crimson, ochre, and emerald dominate the composition, while the sweeping movement of the figures captures the ceremonial pageantry of the Spanish corrida.

The typographic layout in the lower half of the poster details the names of the featured matadors—among them Niño del Barrio, Rafaelillo, and Pascual Márquez—along with information on the fighting bulls and the festive occasion. The elegant art deco style of the text and the vertical structure echo the grandeur of traditional Spanish bullfighting posters of the early 20th century, conveying both prestige and drama. Llopis’s ability to fuse narrative and aesthetic makes this a highly sought-after collector’s piece. Printed by Ortega in Valencia, the poster also exemplifies the golden era of Spanish lithography.

This vintage affiche stands as both an advertisement and a work of art—an evocative reminder of Spain’s cultural heritage and the visual power of poster design in the early 20th century. A rare surviving artifact from a bygone era of spectacle and celebration.
