Against the backdrop of the Cold War, civil war broke out in El Salvador in the 1970s.
The war pitted the US-backed Salvadoran government against the Cuban-backed FMLN (Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front), an armed communist organization.
In all, more than 75,000 people were killed during the conflict.
