The Swiss painter Hans Erni was born in Lucerne in 1909. He first worked as an architect's assistant before beginning his art studies in 1927 at the School of Arts and Crafts in Lucerne. He then studied at the Académie Julian (Paris) and at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin (1930). In Paris, he met Jean Arp, Mondrian, Brancusi, Calder, Henry Moore and others. He was strongly influenced by the works of Braque and Picasso.
