TWA California travel poster from the 1950s. Another beautiful image offered by TWA's favorite artist, David Klein, this poster takes the focus away from busy cityscapes to highlight one of America's most majestic landmarks, found nowhere else in the world: the towering California Giant Sequoias. Long a major attraction for western travelers and nature lovers from around the world, the Wawona Tunnel Tree at Mariposa Grove amazed visitors to Yosemite National Park for nearly 90 years until it fell over during the harsh winter of 1969. A heritage first, this incredible illustration of a now-defunct tree titan is arguably one of Klein's best works for the airline.
Different from most of Klein's other posters, this work reflects less of the dynamism, bright colors and abstract style that marked much of his work. The only abstract part is the touch of shadow in the trees in the background. An angled beam of light passes through the image, illuminating part of the tree and part of the text.
